Sharon Stone, China and the Virtues of Silent Hollywood.

May 28, 2008 / by dunedindentist

I've always liked Sharon Stone's movies. I don't know much about her personally, but that's ok because her personal life is none of my business.

Now that I've complimented her, I can respectfully ask her to shut up. The rest of Hollywood too.

At Cannes, Sharon Stone was quoted as saying the following: "I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else." Yes, and all the rain drops are lemon drops and gum drops.

She further goes on to say: " And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"

So, all of the innocent people in China who are ALSO repressed by their own government get an added bonus of additional suffering with this earth quake and Sharon Stone is suggesting that they were somehow cosmically due for this?

China's largest theater company has said it will no longer play her films. Good on ya, if she can protest you, you can protest her.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating China's treatment of Tibet. But that's one sovereign country's issue with another country. This earthquake affected citizens. Every day folks like you and me, who go to work, watch the news, and also shake their heads at what's going on in the world. These are the people that are left homeless and jobless and orphaned and diseased. And somehow, its their fault because a small group of powerful people in their country are persecuting Tibet.

I won't bore you with more quotes, but basically Stone said she cried because the poor Tibetan monks wrote her and told her they wanted to help the Chinese citizens who have suffered. Newsflash Sharon: They get it. You don't.

Quite a few years back, Mariah Carey was quoted as saying the following about a Somalian: "I would love to be that skinny". Yup, that was about the time Glitter was coming out.

Every time it looks like a Republican is going to get elected, Barbara Streisand and co. threaten to flee the country.

I would love to make a snarky statement about Republican celebrities, but I can't really think of any. The Rock, Bo Derek, Shannon Doherty and a bunch of country singers. No one that's really making news.

But here's the bottom line for all of Hollywood: HUSH.

We don't want your political opinions. We want to go to the movies and forget about the news for a while. Just because you are famous doesn't mean the rest of the world is entitled to your opinion. You're famous because we think you're pretty and talented. Not because we think you're a world class philosopher.

Nothing irritates me more than when people like Ben Affleck try to tell me how to vote. Why should I listen to him, because he's more in touch with his creative side than I am, and therefore understands the issues better than I do? Negative.

How in touch with reality are these celebrities? How often do they worry about finances, about college funds, about healthcare? How often do they worry about the price of gas or food? They don't. The everyman experience is not there with them, so how can they judge what's best?

I'm not total anti-hollywood activist. I do think that people like Paul Newman and his Fresh Air camps, and Angelina Jolie continually going into refugee camps to spend time among those affected and help how she can, are admirable and should be applauded for their efforts. Notice they're helping people, not politicians and policies.

So, as you can see, I'm for the every day, you and me citizen. If you need a break and would like to come into my office for a FREE exam and xrays, please call us at 727.733.1175 or visit us on the web at www.allaboutsmiles.org.
