As any good Floridian knows, sometimes the hot weather gets here before the rainy season. Thus creating wildfires, something we begin to dread every summer. And now they're here, a little earlier than usual.
Most of the time the fires start on the east coast, which is opposite of where I am, but its still a scary thing to turn on the news and see homes being evacuated in your very own state.
This time the lucky recipients of mother nature's "gift" are Daytona and Cocoa, and only portions of 95 were closed. On a holiday weekend. Wonder how that traffic pattern was.
Usually, we here on the West Coast are very lucky and the fires don't come too close to us. Last year we got several days where it was very foggy due to smoke, I remember several patients complaining of respitory issues and all the news channels asking us to stay indoors.
I know, I know, its not exactly Myanmar or China, but its close to home and that's enough for me. So what can we do about it?
If you're a Floridian, or a Californian, or from anywhere else that experiences these fires on a regular and frequent basis... HAVE A PLAN! Have somewhere to go and some way to get there. Have your "important" material goods (as far as I'm concerned, just pictures and documents, everything else is replaceable) in a fire proof box, ready to go with you.
