Dunedin Cosmetic Dentists Opinion on Antarctic Condoms

Ahhhhh Antarctica. Lovely patch of ice at the end of the world. Belonging to no one, yet claimed by many.

Let's take a minute to revisit 6th grade science class. Antarctica is the southern most continent in the world. It encompasses the south pole, is bordered by the Southern Ocean, is the largest desert in the world (its true, look it up!) and is home to penguins, seals and lichen. There are no humans indigenous to Antarctica. Oh yeah, and it is alternates between months of 24 hours of sunlight and 24 hours of darkness.

Let's talk about the darkness.

During the winter, McMurdo research center operates with a skeleton crew of 125 people. 125 people in an enclosed space in the middle of a dark desert for several months. In my opinion, that could go two ways. It could either be the setting of a pretty freaky horror film, or....

Bill Henriksen, the manager of the station could order in 16,500 condoms before for the darkness hits. Which he did. They will be made available to the staff free of charge throughout the winter in order to avoid the potential embarrassment of having to buy them.

Its a small community, everyone has to know everyone. I guess this is a good shot at keeping people's private lives private. And when you think about it... what else is there to do in the middle of Antarctica in the dark?

I'm not going to get into the ethics and morals of premarital sex, safe sex, or anything like that. Its 8 am and their personal lives are none of my business. Sorry if that dissappoints some. I did however, appreciate the foresight and planning of their administration. I'm sure that paying for the condoms is cheaper than paying for an obstetrician on staff.

I have no clever tie in today to invite you to my office for a FREE exam and xrays, so just know you're welcome. Call us at 727.733.1175 or visit us on the web at www.allaboutsmiles.org for more information. See you tomorrow!
