For those of you not familiar with this fuzzy creature, let me introduce you to Reepicheep. Reepicheep is a character in the new Narnia movie, Prince Caspian. He is voiced by Eddie Izzard.
For those of you not familiar with Izzard, he is a British comedian who's original claim to fame was that he dressed in drag while delivering some very witty, mostly historically based stand up comedy. Truth be told, I've never laughed so hard as I did at his DVD "Dressed to Kill". That's why when I heard he was coming to Tampa I got tickets.
Now, just a little bit of background about me. I believe in God. I do missionary dental work in third world countries. I don't generally discuss my beliefs as I understand that doctor/patient relationships need to be warm and conflict free. Three topics always invite conflict: politics, religion and sports. Therefore I stay away from them unless it involves the Bucs. But I digress.
So, I was excited to go to Eddie Izzard's show last night. He started off funny with bits about the origins of the name "Tampa" and bits about Wikipedia. Buuuuuttt.... then he got down to what he called his "scripted" show.
The overall theme of his scripted show? God doesn't exist. If he does, he's stupid, smokes crack and is generally unelectable in today's world.
He then went on to mock Noah's Ark, Moses, the burning bush and for a grand finale, he went on ahead and proclaimed on stage to a sold out crowd that Jesus is not the Son of God, and should be proud of that. Izzard conceeded that Jesus is historically a real person and should be proud that he shaped history without magic mumbo jumbo.
I'm really sorry I spent $100 on tickets and wasted two and half hours of my time having my beliefs mocked. Truthfully, I'm most sorry I didn't leave in the middle of it.
What's really got me upset is the hypocrisy. Izzard plays Reepicheep in Narnia. Narnia is Christian Allegory. Its not one of those pieces of literature that everyone tries to find Christian themes in. Its author, C.S. Lewis flat out said he wrote Narnia as an allegory, and Aslan: the Great Lion, Son of the Emperor Over the Sea, is Jesus: Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Son of the Living God.
So, given Izzard's belief that God is a non-existent crack smoker, why on earth did he choose to be a part of Prince Caspian? Simple: Money.
Given that "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" was such a box office success, it was a given that Prince Caspian would do well. Izzard, who is a B List star at best (remember his parts in Ocean's 12 and 13? Didn't think so.) must have been looking for money and exposure.
Despite his lack of respect for Christianity and its followers, our money is good enough for him. For shame, for shame.
Anyway, now that I've got that off my chest, I'm going to invite you to my office, where I never discuss any of this. If you'd like a free exam and xrays worth $257, please visit us on the web at www.allaboutsmiles.org. See you tomorrow.
