As someone who's interested in marketing, I found this very clever! Of course, I also wonder about the intelligence of those who don't immediately recognize that "Derrie-Air" could not possibly be the name of a real airline.
What the general gist is, is that a Philadelphia newspaper created this airline, and printed ads directing people to the website for further information. The reason they did this is so that they could track the response their print advertising is generating, and thereby have updated data and pricing for their advertisers. I wonder how people like me, who read about it online and visit, effects their data integrity, but I know that's me being geeky.
Here's where Derrie-Air gets interesting. Their gimmick is that they charge people by the pound. From Philly to Chicago, it will cost you $1.40 per pound. So, if you're a Hollywood starlet you will be charged $126. If you're an average joe hitting the Big Macs you could conceivably be charged $350. Believe me, my staff and I hit the jokes pretty hard about this this morning, it wasn't nice of us so I won't do it again.
It kind of is an interesting social question, don't ya think? Its almost like you're being penalized for your size. I wonder how that will be received in an obese society like ours. Would we see people going on binge diets before traveling? We're already required to strip our shoes and go through full body xrays at the airport, will we now be required to weigh in upon arrival too?
I don't know the answers, but the questions sure are interesting. Especially in an age where airlines will have to figure out how to operate in the black with the price of gas, while still being affordable enough to acquire passengers.
Well, my office is firmly in the black and we don't ask for your weight, so call us at 727.733.1175 or visit us on the web at www.allaboutsmiles.org to get your FREE exam and xrays. See you tomorrow!
